Contact Lens Safety Month: How to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

October is Contact Lens Safety Month, making it the perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of looking after your eyes when wearing contact lenses.

Contact lenses offer a convenient and comfortable alternative to glasses, whether you wear them every day or occasionally for sports and social occasions. However, without proper care, they can increase the risk of eye infections, irritation and other complications.

How to Wear Contact Lenses Safely

Following a few simple precautions can help keep your eyes healthy and your contact lenses comfortable.

  • Always wash and dry your hands: Before inserting or removing your lenses, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them with a clean towel
  • Avoid contact with water: Never swim, shower or use a hot tub while wearing contact lenses, as water can introduce harmful microorganisms that may cause serious eye infections
  • Follow replacement schedules: Whether you wear daily, fortnightly or monthly lenses, always replace them as recommended. Never reuse daily disposable lenses
  • Don't sleep in your lenses: Unless specifically prescribed for overnight wear, contact lenses should always be removed before sleeping
  • Keep lenses and cases clean: If you wear reusable lenses, use the recommended cleaning solution and regularly replace your storage case

Why Are Regular Contact Lens Check-Ups Important?

Even if your contact lenses feel comfortable, regular check-ups are essential. Your optician can assess your eye health, ensure your lenses fit correctly and identify any early signs of potential problems. If you experience redness, pain, sensitivity to light or blurred vision, remove your lenses immediately and seek urgent professional advice.

This is a fantastic independent opticians. Nothing is too much trouble for them. You are always warmly welcomed and never rushed. My eyesight is complex and Emma and Charlotte have worked so hard to maximise the sight and find the best glasses. I particularly like the continuity of an independent optician, the staff know you and you don't have to explain everything to a stranger on each visit. My lenses have been complex and expensive but Charlotte tries to keep the cost as low as possible when dispensing. I highly recommend this opticians.

Highly recommend Eyes of Swavesey - they really know what they’re doing. When they found my husband had a serious problem with his eye during a routine checkup, they immediately referred him to Addenbrooke’s for treatment - they take eye health very seriously and have all the technology needed to do the full range of tests, An excellent personal service, and lovely friendly staff who take their time to talk about options and help find the perfect frames from a huge range. Great location just off the A14 - I’d never go anywhere else
