Meet our Receptionist and Optical Assistant… Lisa Drury

Lisa is celebrating three years as part of the Eyes of Swavesey team this month, so we thought you’d like to learn a little more about our ‘voice on the end of the phone’…

What’s your experience to date?

I started my career in optics in 2001 at DH Thomas, joining as a Receptionist. I quickly discovered how much I loved the industry and worked my way up to Clerical Assistant and then Practice Supervisor. My role was incredibly varied, giving me a real understanding of how a practice runs and allowing me to build strong relationships with patients. In 2008, I decided I wanted a change and explored administrative roles in other industries. During that time, I got married and had my two daughters. However, I soon realised how much I missed the world of optics and everything I had learned. Once my girls were settled in school, I returned to optics and was so grateful to be offered an Optical Assistant role at Clamp Optometrists, where I worked for a couple of years, including throughout the COVID pandemic.

How long have you been at Eyes?

I joined Eyes of Swavesey in 2023 after a close family friend spotted an advertisement for a Receptionist/Optical Assistant role — at a practice I had often driven past and said I would love to work in one day. I initially job-shared with the wonderful Alison until her retirement in September 2025, and I’m now working full time and absolutely loving it.

What does your job entail?

My role involves the day-to-day running of reception, ensuring patients feel welcome and looked after from the moment they arrive. With my previous experience in optics, I also support with dispensing — helping patients choose frames, carrying out repairs, and making adjustments.

What excites you about working at Eyes?

I love being part of an independent practice. We take the time to get to know our patients, and that continuity and attention to detail really makes a difference. It’s lovely to be part of a friendly team where patient care is always the priority.

Why should you use an independent optician?

Independent opticians offer a more personalised service. We have the time to listen, understand individual needs and provide tailored advice rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. That personal touch and continuity of care can make all the difference to your eye health and overall experience.

And what’s your top tip around optics/eye health?

Dry eye is a very common condition. Lubricating eye drops can help keep your eyes comfortable, but they work best when used regularly rather than just occasionally.

Away from work, what are your interests/pastimes?

I enjoy DIY and being creative, especially woodwork, building furniture and upcycling. I also helped with the renovation of our family home alongside my husband, Lee. Most importantly, I love spending time with my husband, our two younger daughters and my two older stepdaughters and their partners.
